Ask Jeffrey – “What Will He Feel If He Touches My Wig?”

bigstock-Love-and-affection-between-a-y-44327488

I had the opportunity to write an article for Help Me 2 Stop, an organization working to bridge the gap between Trichotillomania suffers and salon professionals, and I want to share this article with my blog followers because I feel like every woman experiencing hair loss may have these same questions.

There are many special holidays and events that can be a time when many women experiencing hair loss want to hide away and not celebrate with that special someone. You ask yourself, “will he notice that I’m wearing a hairpiece,” “what will he feel when they touch my wig,” “what will his reaction be if I tell them I’m wearing a wig?”

These are all questions we contemplate each day we walk out of our homes and into a world where others never think of these things. But there are things you can do to build confidence in yourself and confidence in your true beauty.

Speak Beauty From the Heart

As many of you know, I end each of my posts with “beauty begins within,” because I truly believe that it does. I see so many beautiful women whose beauty is outstanding, but hidden by fear of rejection or ridicule. It hurts my heart that these women can’t see what we see, and that’s why I’ve dedicated my life to helping them see their true beauty. When life gets you down, remember the following:

Beauty begins with a simple choice you make each and everyday. The words you choose to tell yourself have power to make you feel beautiful each day.

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”  – Romans 10:17

Let me know in your comments below how this message speaks to you. Have you begun to tell yourself that you’re beautiful?

How to Tackle Your Hair Loss: Part 2

bigstock-Content-cute-blonde-drinking-a-52035331In my last blog I talked about how you can start to tackle your hair loss this year as a personal resolution for yourself. If you have begun to collect the hairs that fall out each day, then I want to discuss the next steps.

We want to evaluate various factors or your lifestyle at different times to see how problems might be progressing. You should note that hair loss is related to what happened yesterday – not today. We will likely have forgotten what might have caused it, because the loss becomes noticeable only after the events that triggered it. I encourage my clients to keep a diary or a journal of their hair loss over a ninety-day period – which represents the cycle of hair. I encourage you to do the same before you begin addressing your hair loss concerns constructively, and continue to alter.

For the same reasons, we take a two-to five-year personal history on a client in our initial consultation and create a timeline showing the correlation of events in their lives with noticed amounts of loss. When our clients see these timelines, they often say, “I didn’t realize that all of this was happening at the same time.” The main reason to do that initial assessment is to win the first half of the battle – understanding what has actually happened that brought about some of these issues.

After evaluating every aspect of your life, your hair restoration specialist should have a better idea of why you are experiencing hair loss, what steps you can take to prevent further hair loss, and what solution is a best fit for you.

If you would like to learn more about the right solution for your individual hair loss please email or call me to set up a private and personal consultation with one of my consultation specialists. How to Live Pain Free: Part 4

Your health is something that you need to think about with a total body approach. One of the areas we tend to forget about when working on our posture is our hip flexures. Because most of us sit all day in an office chair, that creates a tightening in our hips, as well as our back and chest. So in today’s series of stretches with Mark Roozen, we show you a stretch that works on your hip flexures and back.

Using a stick for support, begin swinging your leg back and forth. Make sure you’re standing tall and straight up. By kicking your leg back and forth, you are opening up your hips and allowing your back to straighten up.

How to Tackle Your Hair Loss: Part 1

2014 is the year, the year to tackle your hair loss and find out how you can find a solution.

Treating your hair loss starts at home. The products you use at home will change. The way you take care of your hair and even the manner in which you do many standard things in your life will change to accommodate the needs of your hair. I want you to begin to chart your course of treatment and monitor your needs in order to have the most effective outcome.

About a week before clients come in to see us at the Jeffrey Paul Salon, we have them gather and count the hair that falls out during that week. When they come in, we conduct an analysis using a microscopic video monitoring of their scalp, the follicles, the openings where hair emerges from the scalp, and other factors, in order to measure and put a value on the stage of your loss so that you can understand the steps you will need to take to alter the situation. If you collect hair you’ve lost and put it in a clear plastic baggie, daily, for a week, you can see at a glance whether you are losing more or less hair as time goes on.

Peppermint Patties – Homemade

dip-peppermint-patties

Temptations are all around us, and the temptation of sweets always seems to be the worst when you are working towards a goal of eating healthy. But completely eliminating the “sweets” food group is not necessarily good for your diet either.

With that being said, there are sweets you can make at home. This way you know exactly what is in what you’re eating. And, you can make sure it’s a healthy sweet temptation.

Try making these tasty peppermint patties:

Ingredients:

1 ½ cup organic coconut oil
¼ cup raw honey
3 drops peppermint essential oil
1 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 candy cane, crushed

How Often You Should Wash Your Hair

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRpebveZxb0&t

“How often should I shampoo my hair?” –Margo

This is a very common and great beauty question and the answer might just surprise you.

Ideally you should shampoo your every other day, or less often if possible. Unless you are very active and perspiring daily, your hair should be able to last a couple days without shampooing it.

How do you know what’s best for you? Test it out. When you wake up in the morning, spray my Beautiful Hair Spray Conditioner on your hair, brush through and examine how your hair looks. If your roots are a little oily, use dry shampoo to soak up some of the oil.

Your hair isn’t made to be cleaned daily. So go and test out how your hair lasts.

If you continue to stay tuned to my beauty tips you’ll better understand what is right for you and what tips I have to keep your hair looking its best. This includes sleeping on the right pillowcase and using the right products.

What is Trichotillomania?

bigstock-Sad-and-lonely-girl-crying-wit-39905602

Did you ever have a secret that you kept to yourself?  A secret so private that if anyone found out you would be horrified? For many, the answer is yes.

Trichotillomania or compulsive hair pulling can be one of those secrets. My friend, Amy Burzinski, works with individuals suffering from Trichotillomania and she gave us some insight into the disorder.

Trichotillomania (TTM or “Trich”) is a disorder that causes people to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes, eyebrows, or any other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable bald patches. Trichotillomania is a type of body focused repetitive behavior or BFRB for short. People who have trich will describe a strong “urge” to pull. The urge can be so strong that it can almost feel like an attack- unrelenting and demanding attention before anything else can be done.

The 3 Tools Needed to Prevent Broken “Glass” (resolutions)!

photo 1

This past week I had a unique opportunity to take my team, at Jeffrey Paul Salon, out for a team building day. We all visited a local glass shop where each of my staff got the chance to blow glass and make their own glass globe. Not only was this an absolute blast it really made me think about how glass blowing is very similar to making resolutions or a decision to change something in your life.

When we went to blow glass the instructor told us we needed three things. With those things we would be able to make a beautiful work of art. Without them the individual would be left with… BROKEN GLASS! Those three important items for glass blowing were:

  • A Plan or a Teacher
  • An Assistant
  • The Right Tools

Why You Might be Using the Wrong Blow Dryer

People have always asked, “Jeffrey, what should I look for when choosing a blow dryer.” This is a question that more of us should think about when we’re making a purchase, because not all dryers are equal! I want to share with you my favorite blow dryer, and what features it has.

The new CHI touch is my favorite blow dryer and one I would recommend to anyone because it has the following features:

  • Temperature setting
  • Volume of air setting
  • Changeable nosel
  • Ionization setting

These are all important settings because the more heat you use, the less beauty your hair has. Many blow dryers do not have a temperature setting, which in return, causes many of use to over heat our hair.

And the Makeover Winner is….

ld12

“I’m so excited I want to scream… but I don’t want to scare my kids!” – Linsey D.

I am so excited to announce the “A New You Makeover” winner – Linsey D. My team spent a great deal of time trying to decide between the many applicants and the two well deserving finalists. As we spent time with Linsey we found that her hair loss was caused by a combination of Graves Disease, Hashimoto’s Disease and the medications associated with them. We realized that there is a need to bring awareness to women, all over, experiencing thyroid and autoimmune type diseases – that there is a solution for thinning hair and hair loss.

Linsey was so excited to find out that she has been selected as our winner that not only did she want to scream, but said this contest is the only thing she has ever won – besides a coloring contest when she was younger! Her husband was so elated he began yelling and jumping for joy at his office. His co-workers rushed in to see if everything was okay! And our favorite was that when Linsey told her mom, over text, that she had won, Linsey said, “my mom is screaming for joy – over text!”

How to Live Pain Free: Part 3

Sitting in an office all day hunched over your computer can really close you off and cause back pain. As back pain can cause a whole new host of health issues I challenge you to take care of your back in 2014 with Mark Roozen’s series of back exercises.

Part of January’s New Years resolution, I would like to introduce to you stick squats.

  1. Hold a stick with arms apart above your head.
  2. Sit in a chair position (squat), making sure your hands are still above your head, and you are not bending over.
  3. Carefully stand back up with a straight back.
  4. Repeat this squatted position 5-10 times.

This exercise works on your shoulder flexibility, shoulder rotation, posture, core, lower back mobility, and ankle mobility. In return, this will open your backside up so you can get back to work pain free in 2014.

Control the Urge to Over Eat this Holiday

JP_Cookies_!2_24_13

You know that feeling, the little voice that says “Well, I can just eat one more cookie, it IS the holidays.” We have all been there. The holiday season can be a challenge when it comes to managing your healthy eating habits. But I want to help. Here are a few simple steps to help you cut down from overindulging this holiday season.

1.     Focus on the people – not the food.
The holidays are meant to spend time with friends and family. So do that, talk among those you are with, you’re not there for the food.

2.    Make the occasional exception – not the rule.
One day of splurging on holiday food is ok. Just make sure to get back to your normal routine the next day and get through the New Year.

3.    Host the party.
You can ensure there are healthy choices when you host. If you are going to someone else’s house, offer to bring food.
