In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV™…

In December 2014, Kaylee was diagnosed with brain cancer. She was immediately rushed into emergency surgery to remove the tumor, then started chemotherapy and radiation treatment at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in January 2015.

For a year and a half, Kaylee was without hair and would go to school wearing a hat to hide the hair loss. Even though she was winning her battle with cancer, it was hard to feel like a normal girl without her hair.

After finding Wigs For Kids and applying for a hairpiece, Kaylee now has a beautiful head of hair that helps her feel confident again. Now a year and half clean from cancer, Kaylee is an inspiration for kids all over the world who have lost their hair to cancer or another illness.

Menopause and hair loss: “The Change” that’s often overlooked.

Ah, menopause! That natural biological process and inevitable rite of passage that all women experience at some point in their lives. And while every woman’s menopause experience is different, there are some common menopausal symptoms that cause the greatest disruption to everyday life. While hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain are expected during “the change,” many women are unaware and unprepared for the hair thinning and hair loss that can take place during this time. In fact, nearly 40 percent of women experience hair thinning during and after menopause.

For women going through menopause, the cause of hair loss is almost always related to hormonal changes. The body produces less of the female hormones estrogen and progesterone, which are the main triggers for hair growth. When the levels of progesterone and estrogen drop, hair growth slows and hair tends to become thinner. Lifestyle changes, including diet and sleeping habits, can also take a toll. For women experiencing menopause, the added anxiety of hair loss can have devastating effects on one’s self-confidence and daily outlook.

Solutions to Women’s Hair Loss

In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV™, you will discover the following:

  • How Maxie, like so many others, began to notice changes in her hair’s texture, color, and weight
  • What Hair & Scalp Specialists can do to help with your hair thinning and loss
  • A glimpse into the steps involved in finding the best solution for Maxie’s hair loss
  • How Maxie’s self-esteem has returned and she lives her life feeling beautiful on the inside and out

When you become a mother, many things in your life change. Your protective instincts kick in, you become an expert in time management, your sleep pattern changes, and so much more. It’s inevitable.

But hair loss is an unpleasantry that only affects some mothers. Our office coordinator Maxie experienced this first-hand after giving birth to her third child. Prior to having kids, she never imagined that hair loss would be a problem for her.

As Maxie describes in our video, she began to notice the changes in her hair’s texture, color and weight. She would find clumps of hair after taking a shower. Like others, she initially attributed this hair loss to aging and shrugged it off as one of life’s natural occurrences. But these changes weren’t caused by age; it was due to having children.

Alopecia

In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV™…

Imagine stepping into the shower to wash your hair and noticing patches of your healthy hair falling down your shoulders onto the ground around you, leaving spots of baldness on your head. For Claudia, a woman who was used to having a full head of healthy hair all her life, this nightmare became her reality.

It’s called Alopecia, or “spotted baldness” – a condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to patches of hair loss. There’s currently no cure for the condition, but there are treatments that can help.

In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV, you’ll hear about Claudia’s story of living with Alopecia and learn more about the condition and treatments available.

Decoding the Common Beauty Product Label

Ever wonder what those little icons on your shampoo, skin care or makeup bottles mean?  If you’ve never taken the time to understand the common beauty product label, you may just be surprised at what’s hiding inside.

While today’s shoppers are smarter and better informed about food packaging labels, many are still unaware of some of the basic symbols used in labeling cosmetics and beauty products.  Knowing what these symbols mean is just as important for consumers as understanding similar packaging information on food in the grocery aisle.

All cosmetics and personal care products sold in the United States are required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be labeled with ingredients, including botanicals and chemicals used in manufacturing.  There are also universally recognizable symbols used for package labeling that provide more specific product contents and safety information.  Symbols indicating a product’s expiration date, organic makeup or even whether a company adheres to strict animal cruelty-free standards appear on every health and beauty product you use.

It’s important to note that if a product advertised as “organic” doesn’t carry an expiration date, it’s likely not entirely organic. The FDA has distributed information about the term “organic” as it pertains to cosmetics, which is available for public view.

Making sure you know what’s inside of the product you’re considering, as well as having a basic understanding of label symbols and their meanings will help you make a more informed purchase. Here’s a short list of a few of the most common symbols on the market today; recognize any?

Not Your Grandmother’s Wig

To many, the term “hair loss solution” conjures up images of painful hair restoration techniques or the unnatural looking, one-size-fits-all wigs many of our grandmothers wore back in the day. You know the kind of wig we are talking about here, the kind made primarily of low-grade synthetic materials, that unless you weren’t paying any attention at all, you could tell when a lady was wearing one.

Today’s Hair Solutions

There are many advantages to our hair solutions today, including a more natural look in terms of texture, shine and movement, color dimension, and authentic look and feel. Wigs of your Grandma’s days were often hot, itchy and generally uncomfortable. Today’s hair solutions, on the other hand, lack any of those discomforts. Human hair solutions also offer many more styling options. In contrast to synthetics, human hair solutions are heat resistant, so they won’t melt or curl when applying heat.

Pregnancy and Hair Loss: From Glow to “Oh No!”

As we mentioned in our February newsletter, we’re celebrating the pregnancy of one of our stylists, Clair. She and her fiancé are expecting a baby boy in the coming months. This got us talking about pregnancy and its effects on hair and the scalp.

Many women look forward to the “glow” of pregnancy.  During this exciting time, higher levels of hormones can cause many physiological changes – bright, shiny skin and fast growing, fuller hair.  Increased estrogen in the body extends the growth phase of hair, resulting in reduced shedding and changes in texture which can make for seemingly fuller locks.

Watch Cindy’s Solution to – Hereditary Hair Loss

Take a look at this video of Cindy and find out why she says, “I finally feel good about myself and how I look. That makes me happy. I want to share that.”

Cindy was a former hospital employee and always in the public eye, and like most of us, her hair had always been a big part of her appearance. As Cindy began to lose her hair, she was able to determine that her hair loss was not only hereditary, but was also being caused by a medication she was required to take after surgery. Cindy told me that her hair loss started slowly, but as any of us who have experienced loss know, a little is enough to throw us into that private panic, and search for a solution. Cindy came to me at my salon, and we were able to walk her through her thinning and loss, and find a solution that met her needs and made her feel good!

How to Tackle Hair Loss: Part 2

bigstock-Content-cute-blonde-drinking-a-52035331
In last week’s blog post, I talked about how you can start to tackle your hair loss right now. If you have begun to collect the hairs that fall out each day, then I want to discuss the next steps.

We want to evaluate various factors or your lifestyle at different times to see how problems might be progressing. You should note that hair loss is related to what happened yesterday – not today. We will likely have forgotten what might have caused it, because the loss becomes noticeable only after the events that triggered it. I encourage my clients to keep a diary or a journal of their hair loss over a ninety-day period – which represents the cycle of hair. I encourage you to do the same before you begin addressing your hair loss concerns constructively, and continue to alter.
