What Is Dermatitis?
Dermatitis is a very common, yet not always easily identified, classification for scalp and skin inflammation. This may present as an itchy rash or swollen, reddened skin. Although it is not contagious, the presence of the scalp types of dermatitis can leave you feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious.
Seborrheic dermatitis, a more common type of dermatitis on the scalp, is characterized by the presence of red, reddish-yellow or dark red skin patches, covered with small- and medium-sized, thick, yellow and greasy flakes, sometimes appearing as scaly formations. Although dermatitis itself does not cause hair loss, it can lead to hair loss and other scalp and hair problems if left untreated.
Causes of Dermatitis
Dermatitis occurs when a substance, or primary irritant, is used and creates an inflammation on the skin or scalp. Irritants that may cause dermatitis reactions include hair products like shampoos containing harsh cleansers that strip healthy oils from scalp and hair, improper color or chemical services performed on the scalp and hair. Both first time use or continual applications can cause dermatitis.
