With fall approaching, you may start to notice an increase in hair shedding. Is this normal seasonal hair shedding or a sign that points to more significant problems?
As the summer comes to an end and the fall months fast approach, so, too, does seasonal hair shedding. Seeing more hairs than usual on your hairbrush, on the bathroom floor, or in the shower can leave the average man or woman in a bit of a panic. But is this kind of hair loss typical? Should you be concerned?
We shed an average of 80 to 100 hairs every day. This is considered normal, healthy hair shedding. These hairs that are shed are not lost. Instead, they go through a cycle of growth, transition, and then rest, when hairs release and are shed, before the process repeats. As a result, you may notice an increase in shedding during certain times of the year, especially in the late fall months. This common phenomenon is known as seasonal shedding.
The cold weather has arrived, and with it, the need for heavy jackets, hats and scarves. Those blistering winds will have you wanting to keep every inch tucked away, and if you wear a hairpiece, this can present a unique challenge.
When your hair rubs against the back of your neck and another material, such as a wool scarf, it creates friction. Friction can unfortunately lead to hair breakage, split ends and frizziness. Breakage can result in hair tangling and even hair loss. Additionally, extreme temperatures, both too hot and too cold, can negatively impact your hairpiece.
Here at Jeffrey Paul Hair and Scalp Specialists, we want your hair to look healthy, glowing and beautiful all year round. Here’s how you can stay warm this winter, without causing damage to your hairpiece.
Silk Scarf
Silk scarves can provide warmth just as well as wool scarves, making them a great alternative for those who wear hairpieces. The material is smooth so they won’t cause friction, yet they preserve heat. Silk preserves the moisture in your hairpiece, to avoid drying out the hair. Wigs lose moisture when exposed to the cold, and silk helps to lock in the hydration.
Silk Hat
Silk can also be used to protect your hair from your warm winter hats. In addition to wool, cotton, acrylic and other coarse (but warm) fabrics can be detrimental to your hairpiece. The good news is you can still wear them if you line the interior with silk or satin. Just like with the scarf around your neck damaging your hair from underneath, hats can damage the hair at the top of your head. To preserve your hairpiece, simply sew the silk or satin material into your favorite winter hat. This will also limit your hair’s exposure to the cold temperatures, protecting it against the damage caused by wind and snow.
Moisturize
It’s also important to moisturize your hairpiece during the winter months, to combat the brutal temperatures outside. This can be done by deep conditioning your wig or using products like a hair mask. Another way to maintain the moisture in your wig is by limiting the use of straighteners, curling irons and blow dryers. However, it’s also important to note that you should never go outside in freezing temperatures with your wig when it’s still wet. The hair can freeze, which can cause it to break more easily.
Hair care during the winter months is crucial to making your hairpiece last. A hairpiece made from human hair needs just as much care as your natural care to protect it against cool winter temperatures. Hair maintenance is key to keeping your wig’s shape, thickness and look intact during this time of year.

What Trichotillomania is
The different stages of hair pulling severity
The research behind this common disorder
If you’ve ever felt like pulling your hair out, you are not alone. While this is a common figurative phrase, pulling your hair in a literal sense is very real, and it’s a common disorder that many people may not even realize exists.
What is Trichotillomania?
Trichotillomania, a neurobiological and behavior disorder known as “Hair Pulling Disorder,” is the repetitive pulling out of one’s hair. According to the TLC Foundation, “Trichotillomania is one of a group of behaviors known as Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), self-grooming behaviors in which individuals pull, pick, scrape, or bite their hair, skin, or nails, resulting in damage to the body.” Trichotillomania affects about 1 in 25 people, and the best way to manage this disorder is to educate yourself. While many who experience these urges feel shame and embarrassment, it is essential to spread the message that they are not alone, and there is help out there.
In the video above, Clinical Psychologist Dr. Renae Reinardy discusses this common disorder, the variations of severity and the options for people suffering from this problem that are available.
If you or someone you know has hair loss due to the pulling urges, contact us at Jeffrey Paul’s Hair and Scalp Specialists. We can help assess the problem and provide guidance as to your next steps.

How Maxie, like so many others, began to notice changes in her hair’s texture, color, and weight
What Hair & Scalp Specialists can do to help with your hair thinning and loss
A glimpse into the steps involved in finding the best solution for Maxie’s hair loss
How Maxie’s self-esteem has returned and she lives her life feeling beautiful on the inside and out
When you become a mother, many things in your life change. Your protective instincts kick in, you become an expert in time management, your sleep pattern changes, and so much more. It’s inevitable.
But hair loss is an unpleasantry that only affects some mothers. Our office coordinator Maxie experienced this first-hand after giving birth to her third child. Prior to having kids, she never imagined that hair loss would be a problem for her.
As Maxie describes in our video, she began to notice the changes in her hair’s texture, color and weight. She would find clumps of hair after taking a shower. Like others, she initially attributed this hair loss to aging and shrugged it off as one of life’s natural occurrences. But these changes weren’t caused by age; it was due to having children.
Imagine stepping into the shower to wash your hair and noticing patches of your healthy hair falling down your shoulders onto the ground around you, leaving spots of baldness on your head. For Claudia, a woman who was used to having a full head of healthy hair all her life, this nightmare became her reality.
It’s called Alopecia, or “spotted baldness” – a condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles, leading to patches of hair loss. There’s currently no cure for the condition, but there are treatments that can help.
In this episode of Hair Loss Solutions TV, you’ll hear about Claudia’s story of living with Alopecia and learn more about the condition and treatments available.
