“Jeffrey, I do a lot of outdoor activities in the summer. How can I protect my hair from the sun?” – Sarah
That’s a wonderful question and I think many people can relate. Damage comes from a variety of factors, but during the summer months the sun is definitely a huge contributor to dry, damaged hair and color fading.
Did you know that, like skin, hair has melanin and keratin that acts as a natural “shield” against the sun’s harmful rays? Unfortunately, it doesn’t renew itself like our skin does. Once hair shafts are damaged, they cannot be repaired. That’s when your hair will feel dry, becomes difficult to style and does not look its best.
So, what’s the best solution? Wearing a hat or covering your hair with a elegant scarf is by far the best protection for your hair. If that does not fit your lifestyle or activity, I highly recommend the Phytoplage Protective Sun Veil. This product is lightweight – doesn’t weigh hair down – SPF for your hair! It helps preserve color and prevent fading by filtering out the sun’s damaging rays, while also adding a luminous veil of shine. So this summer make sure to protect not only your body, but your beautiful hair as well!

“I have 20% hair loss due to hereditary. I am 65 years old and in good health. I have heard about laser treatment, Can you tell me the success rate or, would you recommend a different treatment?” ~Brenda M.
Thank you for your question, Brenda! Hereditary hair loss is one of the major causes of hair loss in healthy women. Much like you, many women are looking for a solution for their hair thinning or hair loss. The first thing to keep in mind is that there is no “magic pill.” No matter what the product, service or specialist tells you the only way to grow hair back is if there is a healthy hair follicle beneath the scalp. Once the follicle is gone, it is unfortunately not coming back.
I often ask my guest this question, ” If you looked in the mirror three months from now what will your hair loss look like then?” If you are noticing more than the normal shedding of 80-100 hairs per day then in three months there is a great likelihood that your hair loss will progress even further. The goal now is to make sure your scalp is in a healthy condition in order for hair to grow stronger, faster, thicker and be less inclined to fall. So when you look at yourself in the mirror three months from now your hair loss has not worsened, and your hair is thicker helping to give the appearance of even less hair loss.
“I have been noticing a great deal of tangling in my nape area as well as the underside of my hair. It seems to have increased in the last few weeks. Is it possible that the cold weather is causing my hair to tangle?” Janelle V.
Janelle, thank you for your question! This is an excellent question, and one that I believe many women will benefit from.
The weather in the Cleveland area has definitely turned more frigid…Brrrrr! With that change of weather also comes a change in the clothes that we wear. During the winter months we wear heavier clothes to stay warm, but it can be these added layers that are causing the tangling and friction you are experiencing.
Sweaters, scarves, hats and jackets that are made out of wool or rougher materials are great to keep us warm; however they are also one of the leading contributors to tangles in hair. As you wear these items your hair is constantly rubbing against these materials and articles of clothing, especially in the collar area (nape area) and the underside of your hair. This constant rubbing causes friction and friction leads to tangling. This is very similar to what you can experience at night if you are not sleeping on a satin pillow case (Click Here to read more about friction caused at night).
Combine the heavier clothes and the natural dryness in the air during winter months and you have the perfect combination for dry, tangly hair.
The best way to combat against the friction, tangles and dry hair, is to
“Why do I have to leave the protein treatment in my hair for 3 minutes?” -Cathy

“Jeffrey, my hair seems damaged and just does not look the way I want it to, do you think i have damaged hair?” -Ashley
This is a question I hear from my guests or people I meet, who find out that I speacialize in hair! Most people don’t realize how easy it can be to damage hair. Did you know that 9 out of every 10 customers who come in have some form of damaged hair and desperately need to restore their hair with protein? Hair could be damaged from a multitude of things – such as being curled, blow-dried, flat-ironed, color treated and more.
A protein treatment helps repair split ends, it increases the hair’s body, makes hair more manageable, increases hair’s shine, and protects hair against further damage.
With any product, it can be tricky to know the correct amount to use. Everyone’s hair is unique – from length to texture! To be sure you’re not overusing your protein treatment product (and costing yourself more money), use these tips!
“Jeffrey, I have made the decision to proceed forward with a hair solution. Before I do so my biggest question is which hair is better for me Human Hair or Synthetic Hair?” ~ Jackie L.
This is not only an excellent question, but the answer is also very important in order to make the best selection for your hair loss solution. Let me take you through some of the details of the two types of hair as well as the Pro’s and Con’s of both.
“Why should I ditch my regular comb or brush for a Wet Brush? Does it really make a difference?” – Alicia
This is a great question! Tangles are a women’s worst enemy when it comes to hair. Many of the women I talk to ask why they can’t get the tangles out of their hair or better yet how to get tangles out of their hair or hair system. One of the biggest culprits for not getting tangles out of hair is using the wrong types of brushes. Not only will the wrong brush not get the tangles out, it could also create further damage by causing hair breakage. For a women who has thin hair or hair loss, any additional breakage to hair could be devastating. So the right brush makes all the difference.
The Wet Brush is my go-to detangling tool of choice. At first glance, The Wet Brush looks like an ordinary hair brush, but with just one use, you will notice a complete difference. It can be used on wet or dry hair. It quickly and painlessly detangles even the thickest, most stubborn hair. The Wet Brush’s Inteli-Flex bristle is designed to be ultra-thin and flexible, yet still have rapid recovery memory to instantly bounce back to its original form. In addition, the ball tip bristles provide a massaging action that stimulates circulation at the follicle and is a proven benefit for hair health.
So not only are you getting the tangles out, but you are also getting a scalp massage at the same time – and everyone I know loves a great scalp massage!
I tell my guests that it is most important to be using this type of brush on wet hair as hair can be very vulnerable when wet. Additionally, before going to bed each evening and/or once or twice throughout the day brushing through your hair, with the right brush, and a detangling spray will keep your hair looking good and feeling great!

“How can I appear more confident in my personal or professional life even when I don’t feel it?” – Lauren
Perhaps you’ve seen that woman who passes you on the sidewalk or who sits across from you at the weekly office meeting and you can’t help but think, “Wow, she sure is poised. How can I be so sure of myself like her?” Remember, to portray confidence, you must believe that you’re confident. Here are a few tips to portraying confidence:
Body Language: Confident people sit up straight, walk with their head held high, and aren’t afraid of eye contact.
Speech: When you speak with a purpose and in a relaxed tone, you immediately come off self-assured.
Dress: While confidence comes from the inside, the easiest way to prove it to yourself is to dress in clothing that makes you feel good (no, not sweatpants!). This doesn’t mean flashy is the go-to either. Confidence shouldn’t be mistaken for cockiness.
Now, with these tips, it’s your turn to be that all around confident person that people look at and say, “Now she’s sure of herself!”

“Jeffrey, I have begun losing my hair and am unsure about what to ask my stylist or a hair loss specialist in order to find someone who is going to do a good job recommending a solution. What questions should I be asking?” ~ Alicia P.
When a woman begins experiencing hair loss and thinning it can be an experience with a lot of unanswered questions. What do I do? What can I do? Is there a solution for me?
Talking to your stylist is a big step, and one I want you to make as part of your New Year’s resolution. You may be embarrassed, you may want to hide your thinning and loss, but your stylist is there to help. Here are some questions to ask your stylist, or a hair loss specialist, and what responses you would want to receive.
1. Do you specialize in women’s hair loss issues? Can I talk to one or two of your clients who had similar circumstances to mine.
Good answers: Yes, or, mostly. Of course, we can arrange that, and maybe you can even meet one of them, who was happy with our work – have a look at the solution she selected!
“Over the years my eyebrows have greatly thinned. Each morning I spend close to 30 minutes putting on my eyebrows and I am always concerned that they are not even and fearful they could wipe off by accident. I long for the day I don’t need to worry about this any longer. Is there anything I can do?” – Maxie
Maxie, this is a great question and a question that I believe many women experience every day. The solution that I have found to have exceptional results is permanent makeup.
Permanent makeup or Micro pigmentation is a procedure in which an organic pigment is embedded beneath the skin to add permanent color. Permanent makeup involves the use of a hand-held device that punctures the skin hundreds of times per minute with very thin needles and pushes the pigment into the desired location – very similar to receiving a tattoo.
Permanent makeup can be performed in areas that include: eyeliner, eyebrows, lip liner, or lip fill. It can also be performed for camouflage of scars or birthmarks.
The best part about permanent makeup is that it is extremely natural looking, has very little pain or discomfort associated with it and it allows you to have a maintenance free solution to thinning eyebrows.
As a part of this $3,000 the winner will receive permanent makeup and airbrush application. If you are interested in learning more about this contest Click Here. If you are interested in entering to win this makeover:

“After I work out I rinse my head, does that do any damage to my hair piece without fully performing the steps?” – Linda
Linda, thank you for your great question. I am sure many people are asking the same question. After working out, I recommend following the “detangle” step of my Video Maintenance Training. Also, make sure to always use a shower filter when rinsing your hair to prevent against the damage caused by chlorine.
You may also utilize a dry shampoo, in this type of situation, to dry the oils out of the hair prior to washing the next day. Not every dry shampoo can be used on a hair replacement system. Make sure you use one that has been tested and is approved by my salon for your hair system. I also do not recommend using the dry shampoo as a replacement for the maintenance program, but instead as an occasional add-in for situations like after working out.
I hope this answers your question! Please keep your questions coming! For more information on becoming a guest at Jeffrey Paul Salon please emailor call us to set up a free private consultation or visit our guest corner for more guest specific information.
“I have been having hair loss for about a year and a half now. I thought it was due to stress but it has been continuing. I have had my thyroid tested and the test came back fine. Any other thoughts on causes? I am 37 and no other women in my family have had any other issues.” – Sarah
This is a very common question, thank you Sarah. Determining where your hair loss is coming from is a key step when it comes to understanding your hair loss. In my previous blog post, “Dis-Tress Hair Thinning and Loss,” I touched lightly on a few causes of hair thinning and loss. In this post I want to expand further on the topic.
Sarah is correct to question both stress and thyroid issues initially as the cause of her hair loss as these are two common factors. Other factors include diet and medications. If you aren’t consuming the right kinds—or enough—nutrients, your hair isn’t either. Water, iron, zinc, copper, vitamins A, B, and C, and protein are all essential for hair to grow healthy and strong. Check out these posts for some good recommendations on healthy snacks and foods that will help strengthen hair.
Lastly, medications can be a contributing factor for hair loss. When taking medications such as oral contraceptives, chemotherapy, and blood pressure medications, each can cause hair loss when taking them and, sometimes when stopping them.
I hope this helps you to understand where your hair loss may be coming from.
