“I feel great! I feel energetic, younger, lively and I feel like I have a new lease on life! I feel like myself again.” – Judy
At the young age of 53, Judy had already experienced hair loss twice. First when she was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer and had to endure radiation and chemotherapy. That time, she was lucky enough to have her hair grew back. Then Judy had to go through radiation and lost her hair again. Unfortunately, this time it never fully came back, and as someone working in the public eye, she was concerned that people could see her scalp.
Consultation:
Judy came to my salon to see what could be done about her hair loss. Our first step was an extensive consultation that included options for hair and color, a patch test for skin sensitivity and options for personal styling.
Base your actions not on what just happened, but on what you would like to now make happen. You can’t change what already is, but you most certainly have influence over what will be.
Choose your actions and responses based on the outcomes you desire, not on the history you’ve experienced. Sure, it’s great to let the past inform you, but not good at all to let it control you.
Instead of trying to win an argument or prove a point or assign blame, put your energy into creating new value. Instead of being drawn into a useless negative reaction, choose a useful, helpful and positive outcome.
You don’t have to react to rudeness with more rudeness and you don’t have to react to injustice with more injustice. Decide to put an end to the negativity by focusing on a highly desirable outcome.
You may not have been the person in the wrong, yet you can be the person to make it right. So make the most of that extraordinary opportunity.
Look ahead, and choose the very best outcome for everyone involved. Then positively, politely, and enthusiastically put your efforts into making that outcome happen.
Protein, Protein, Protein! Every product today seems to talk about protein. Why is this and are all proteins created equally?
Hair is made up of 97% protein. So protein in hair is extremely important especially when it comes to repairing damaged hair. Think of hair as being verysimilar to a road… the smoother the road the better. 9 out of every 10 guests who come in, both at my salon as well as at all salons, have some form of damaged hair and thus all of those guests desperately need protein in their hair.
Damaged hair is caused by a few different factors including: mechanical stress factors (hot styling tools), chemical stress factors (color services) and climatic stress factors (sun/chlorine). With this damage the hair is leftdry, tangled and broken. By placing the right protein into the hair the protein acts to repair hair and make hair once again smooth.
There are two factors I looked at when formulating my Beautiful Hair Protein Treatment: Type of Protein (size of molecule) & Percentage of Protein. These two factors determine how long it will take for the protein to work as well as how much repair will be made to the hair.
For my Protein Treatment we used the highest quality Silk Amino Acid Protein. Here are the three most commonly used proteins found in products.
“Losing my breast was not really the issue. My hair was – as a woman it’s a big part of how people view you… Jeffrey Paul, and his team, gave me back the feeling of beauty both on the inside and with my hair!” – Kristin.
Kristin is a stage one breast cancer survivor. As a result of her chemotherapy, she knew she would lose her hair. That was both scary and confusing. She had always been known as someone with a full head of thick, blonde, beautiful hair. Even though she knew her hair didn’t define who she was, she was still very overwhelmed.
Consultation:
At my salon, the first step for Kristin was to meet with one of my consultants who evaluated her situation and her coming loss. For Kristin, we recommended a full cranial prosthesis. Kristin learned everything about a new hair system—how measurements were taken, the cap fitting, the breath-ability of the piece, the differences between human hair and synthetic, how it would be secured, and more.
“I am certain that you have heard about “WEN®” products. I would think the products would work great with the integrative hair system I have. What do you think?” ~Susan H.
Susan, thank you for your great question! It is so very important to know what you are putting in your hair and how it affects your hair not just in the short run, but more importantly in the long run!
My five Beautiful Hair products are formulated to be used on both hair systems (including extensions and wigs) as well as on growing hair. When I designed these products I worked with a manufacturer to put together the highest quality product with the best ingredients possible. I did this in order for our hair care system to achieve the three greatest wants of my guests.
To get the most natural look out of their hair and hair system
To have the hair system last as long as possible and stay in the best possible condition.
To be able to have our guests get the results we achieve in our salon – at home, on their own.
Last week, I took my team at Jeffrey Paul Salon out for a Team building day. We took a day off work, rented some bikes and rode on a path in a beautiful area of town. Throughout the ride we took turns sending each team member from the back to the front and cheered them on. Most of my team does not ride and some had not been on a bike for almost 30 years. At the end of the day we told everyone we had gone 13 miles. They could not believe it!
A few days later one of my team members emailed me this, “I would never have dreamed I could do such a thing (ride 13 miles). For so many years I’ve been told ‘I can’t.’ Thank you for finally telling me ‘I can!’”
Not only is this truly inspirational to me, but it also reminds me of the story of how they train elephants. Watch this video and ask yourself, “What’s holding me back?”

“Jeffrey, when I wake up in the morning after I’ve done everything for the family, I get up and my eyes are all swollen. How do I get rid of my swollen eyes” – Noel K.
That is a great question! You could invest in an eye gel mask or simply purchase a bag of frozen peas or corn. Place the bag on the top of your eyes, lay back and relax for a few minutes! By cooling those eyes down the blood supply will return back to the eye area and the swelling will go down!

“My experience with this whole process has been amazing! I can’t tell you how much my self esteem is up and how happy this has made me. It just means so much!” –Vicki
Vicki, a very good friend of mine, was at a crossroads. The 55 year old dental assistant had tried finding solutions to her hair thinning and loss – including wigs. But nothing seemed to give her the natural look she wanted. She made a choice to get a professional assessment of her hair thinning and loss and to find solutions that would work for her.
Consultation:
At my Salon, the first step, for Vicki, was to meet with one of my consultants who evaluated her hair as well as her thinning and loss. We use two categories when defining the level of hair loss. First is diffusion, which indicates the percentage of thinning. Next is the pattern, which includes the extent of the thinning area.
Posture is as much a part of one’s well being as the food they eat or their daily exercises, yet it’s something that we often neglect. Dr. Casen, from the Drugless Doctor discusses the benefits and tips for having the perfect posture and how having poor posture affects your health!
Dr. Casen-
I have seen an increase number of our practice member’s coming into our office after a day at the office complaining of upper back tightness and rounded shoulders. I then ask them THE QUESTION: Have you stretched today? Many people don’t get up and move while they’re working. It’s so important to know what exercises you can be doing when you’re not in our office that can help you better your posture. I found this great article that gives us some pointers on how to improve posture and a short video what exercises you can do to help. Enjoy!
What a weekend! It was a whirlwind of excitement, ponytails, rain, sweat, cows (!) and a whole lot of fun! We’d like to send a special thank you to everyone who came out for our annual fundraiser at the Cleveland Zoo to support the Wigs for Kids mission!
The day started out rather dreary with some rain showers, but with your help we had a fabulous day regardless! (It turns out some runners prefer to run in the rain…who knew!) Over 1,000 participants came out to run/walk the 5k to the finish line where we had the Chick-fil-A cows, and an entire league of superheroes waiting! With your help we raised approximately $77,000 dollars to help provide wigs for 20, 2013 recipients!
We’ll have more pictures to post on Facebook and Pinterest, but for now check out this fabulous video created by one of our biggest fans!
We would like to send a very special thank you to each and every one of you that participated or donated, as well as this year’s sponsors:
Do you remember Emma? Children like Emma and Kiken (read his story below) are able to hop, skip, jump and play around the playground just like normal children their age despite suffering from illnesses that leave them with little to no hair on their heads. How? Because of your generous donations of your own hair, your time, or your finances.
Last weekend the community of Cleveland came together for a cut-a-thon at the Cleveland convention center to cut their hair for this year’s Wigs for Kids recipients, but tomorrow you have the opportunity to help even if your hair isn’t 12 inches long! Sign up to Walk/Run at the Wigs for Kids Day at the Zoo event where we will be celebrating these fantastic children by raising money to help more children look and feel themselves. The event and sign up information is below, don’t miss out on a chance to put a smile on a child’s face!
For 8-year-old Kiken, receiving a hairpiece will change his life. Because he suffers from alopecia, the kids at school are bullying him. With the funding for a hairpiece he will fit in among his peers and be a ‘normal’ kid!

When you are experiencing hair thinning or loss, one of your best tools can be your very own hair! Stylists all over the world are using specific styling and cutting techniques to hide (or accentuate!) all sorts of features. This skill set is so very important when you are looking for help with hair thinning or loss. This skill is the ability to determine what the perfect style is based on your facial structure. Let’s take a look at an example:
When your face is square…
How do you know if your face is square? Take a look at your jaw line and forehead. If you have a ‘square brow’ and your jaw line and your brow are the same width chances are that you have ‘square’ facial features.
Now that we know you have ‘square’ features we can begin to determine how to make your hair look full and thick without any replacement pieces! One of the best ways to create the allusion of a full head of hair for women with a square face is to use volume and structure, much like the picture of Michelle to the right. In order to give Michelle the allusion of thick hair we would want to soften her sharp jaw angle and minimize the shape of her brow. To do this we would frame her face with a soft fringe to make it look more oval, and cut the bulk of her hair to less than 4 inches with layers to add ‘fluff’ to give the illusion of volume. With a few peek-a-boo bangs and layering around the next Michelle’s look is softer, fun and gives her great lift to minimize the insecurity of her hair thinning!
It’s amazing what the right hairstyle and cut can do for your face, or the volume of your hair. And it’s not the same for each face! It’s so important to talk with your hairdresser about the shape of your face and what will work best for you!
There are many different ‘hair loss solutions’ out there on the market today that promise a ‘miracle solution’ that will stop all hair loss. At Jeffrey Paul Salon we know that hair loss is very specific to the individual, their diagnosis, their habits and their lifestyle. Sometimes the solution is not a pill or an extremely invasive procedure but rather taking a strong hard look at your lifestyle.
For example, meet my friend Cathy. Cathy began to notice that her hair was extremely dry and was starting to fall out. At the time her salon told her it was a side affect of the products that she was using, however Cathy was eventually diagnosed with Alopecia. Cathy, like most of us in her situation, began the search for the solution that would solve her problem.
After many different quests, including a trip to a dermatologist for scalp injections, Cathy came in for a consultation at Jeffery Paul Salon. We were able to advise her on her hair loss and we suggested that she begin by changing her lifestyle – to make sure that she was taking in the right vitamins and consuming the right foods and beverages to maximize the nutritional benefits for growth and reviving her hair. Along with this we recommended some conditioning products and laser light therapy – to help stimulate blood flow in the scalp and strengthen the hair follicle and hair shaft.
For Cathy, focusing on nutrition and supplements combined with conditioning hair products and light therapy sessions have allowed her hair to become shiny and healthy once again and have helped to lessen the hair loss she was experiencing.
If you would like to learn more about the right solutions for your individual hair loss please email us to set up a private and personal consultation with one of our specialists.
“Jeffrey, how can I make my eye lashes look like those commercials where the eye lashes get bigger, broader and wider?” –Lauren
What a great question! The key is to having fabulous full lashes is to use a clean, makeup free, mascara brush. After applying a layer of good mascara—while the mascara is still wet—take the clean wand and extend the mascara even further! Also remember to wash your mascara off before bed so they look beautiful each morning!
